Battalion 12 – Shaver Lake Battalion of the CAL FIRE Fresno-Kings Unit is in Central California and makes up part of the Eastern San Joaquin Valley. The Battalion consists of 121,192 acres of State responsibility land under direct CAL FIRE protection. The Battalion is bordered on the east side by the Sierra National Forest. The north side of the Battalion is bordered by Madera Mariposa Merced Unit, while the West and Southern boarder by Battalion 11 and Battalion 13. The elevation of the Battalion ranges from about 400 to 7,300 feet. Many roads traverse the Battalion providing travel routes for the multiple communities. The major travel rout is Highway 168, Highway 168 is a daily comminutor travel route it also provides a high volume of visitor traffic through the Battalion each day to the many year-round accessible recreation areas within the Battalion and Sierra National Forest. The primary fuel models of the Battalion consist of seasonal grasses, grass oak woodland, with California brush models and conifer timber models. The Battalion has seen a major growth in population and residential construction over the past several years.
Battalion 12 has two State Forest Fire Stations, Shaver Lake, and Blasingame. and one Fresno County Fire Protection District, Station 75 located in Tollhouse. Battalion 12 also has one retired lookout, Black Mountain. Both stations are year-round staffed stations funded by the State and Amador programs.
